Müller says Liverpool's Wirtz would have had easier start in Munich

Florian Wirtz would have probably had an easier start at Bayern Munich than at Liverpool, former Bayern great Thomas Müller has said.

Germany playmaker Wirtz, 22, was sought by Bayern last summer but moved to Anfield from Bayer Leverkusen instead for a fee of up to €150 million ($177 million).

He has had a difficult start in England, with zero goals and one assist in the Premier League.

"His footballing adaptation would have certainly been easier at Bayern because he would have remained in the same league," Müller told Wednesday's Süddeutsche Zeitung.

However, Müller also said that a German international like Wirtz would have also had a lot of media attention in Munich "which you simply have if things don't go well at Bayern." He said foreign players would be less in the spotlight in such a case.

Müller, 36, left Bayern after 25 years in summer after his contract was not renewed. He now plays for the Vancouver Whitecaps in Major League Soccer where he reached the final with the Canadian team.

He said he left Munich "on good terms" and has no regrets.

"I really liked being part of this team and would have liked to have stayed in spring. But I can already say that the adventure in Vancouver probably gave me more emotionally as a footballer than a first half of the season with Bayern as a substitute." he said.
