The Berliner said was delighted to be offered the opportunity to head the jury in his home city, according to a festival press release.

"That’ll be a whole new way to see films at the Berlinale, for once watch each and every one in the Competition and discuss them all in-depth with a group of intelligent and movie-loving people. How good can it get?" Wenders said.

The 80-year-old is regarded as one of the leading figures of New German Cinema and a major influence on international filmmaking over a career spanning six decades.

He is known for films such as "Paris, Texas," "The Sky Over Berlin," “Pina” and "Perfect Days."

Wenders himself has also been honoured at the Berlinale, winning the honorary Golden Bear in 2015.

The award ceremony is planned for February 21.
