Club world champions Chelsea claimed a 3-0 statement victory over 10-man Barcelona in the Champions League on Tuesday while Manchester City suffered a shock 2-0 home defeat against Bayer Leverkusen.

An own goal from Barca's Jules Kounde in the 27th, a stunner from teenager Estevao in the 55th and Liam Delap in the 73rd gave Chelsea a prestigious victory at Stamford Bridge in a duel of ex-champions against Barca.

The Spanish champions had Ronald Araujo sent off shortly before half-time.

Erling Haaland was among several stars who did not start for City at Etihad Stadium, and when he came on in the 65th but it was too late to reverse Leverkusen's lead from Alejandro Grimaldo in the 23rd and Patrik Schick in the 53rd.

It was a second straight setback for Pep Guardiola's side who were beaten 2-1 on the weekend by Newcastle United in the Premier League.

Newcastle could not follow up as they lost 2-1 at Olympique Marseille from a brace by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the first five minutes of the second half.

Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund trounced 10-man Villarreal 4-0 from Serhou Guirassy's brace, Karim Adeyemi and Daniel Svensson in a match where Guirassy and Fabio Silva failed to convert penalties for the hosts.

But Dortmund climbed into fourth place with 10 points, ahead of Chelsea and City on goal difference.

The trio is two points behind Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Inter Milan who have a maximum 12 points going into their matches on Wednesday - when Arsenal host Bayern in a table topper and Inter visit Atletico Madrid.

Chelsea shine

Chelsea and Barca provided a lively game from the kick-off, with Enzo Fernandez finding the net twice for the hosts but the goals nullified for handball in the build-up and offside, respectively.

At the other end, Ferran Torres missed a sitter for Barca when he aimed inches wide right.

The Blues were finally ahead when Marc Cucurella's was turned into his own goal by Kounde, and Barca had a mountain to climb when Araujo got his marching orders for a second bookable offence shortly before intermission.

Teenager Estevao then smashed a spectacular second into the roof of the net 10 minutes after the restart after beating two defenders, and Delap tapped the third as Chelsea claimed a fine win ahead of their Premier League topper against Arsenal on the weekend.

"It was definitely the best moment of my career so far," Estevao told Prime Video. "I don't really have any words to sum up how I'm feeling right now. It really was the perfect night."

Barca defender Eric Garcia said: "Chelsea were putting us under pressure and we didn't adjust well. We had to run after the ball the whole time. We need to be more competitive in these types of matches. If you don't make yourself strong, it's impossible to win."

Rotation backfires for City

There was nothing perfect in Manchester where Guardiola rang 10 changes to no avail in his 100th Champions League in charge at the club and next faces a daunting trip to record winners Real Madrid.

Last year's Bundesliga champions led from Grimaldo's low shot into the far right corner after City failed to clear, and Schick nodded the second after sneaking in front of Nathan Ake.

Guardiola brought on the likes of Phil Foden for the second half, and Haaland followed midway through the half but they were unable to prevent a first defeat in the campaign which had recently been thrashed 7-2 at home by holders Paris Saint-Germain.

"I don't know whether we expected this result. It feels wonderful. We really fought until the last second," Schick told streaming portal DAZN.

Guardiola admitted that his changes were "too much", telling TNT Sport: "I take full responsibility, still I think the players that started were exceptional players but we missed something needed at the highest level. We now have to fight for the next games."

Dortmund also win

While Chelsea were the only English team to win, Dortmund completed a perfect night for German sides although they were far from convincing.

Guirassy headed them ahead at the end of a rather lacklustre first half and the second in the 54th came on the rebound of his penalty saved by goalkeeper Luiz Junior after Villarreal captain Juan Foyth was sent off for handball on the goalline.

Adeyemi's goal for 3-0 four minutes later came when he was hit by a clearance from Thomas Partey, Silva then smashed a second Dortmund penalty against the crossbar before Svensson wrapped up matters.

The other matches

Jose Mourinho's Benfica got their first points with a 2-0 success at Ajax in a duel of the two bottom ranked former champions, with Samuel Dahl on target early and Leandro Barreiro wrapping up matters late on.

Rasmus Hojlund missed a penalty but Scott McTominay and an own goal from Marko Jankovic secured a 2-0 victory for Napoli against Qarabag on the fifth anniversary of the death of club icon Diego Maradona.

Juventus stole a first victory of the campaign, 3-2 at Norway's Bodö/Glimt, from Jonathan David in stoppage time.

Ten-man Galatasaray suffered a surprise 1-0 home defeat against Belgium's Union Saint-Gilloise from a short range effort by David Promise while Slavia Prague v Athletic Bilbao ended 0-0.
