Coach Niko Kovac said his Borussia Dortmund team "didn't deserve more than one point" in the 3-3 draw in the Bundesliga opener against St Pauli on Saturday.

St Pauli struck in the closing stages as they fought from two goals down to get a point against 10-man Dortmund, whose Serhou Guirassy failed to convert a penalty.

"Today was a day where we didn't deserve more than one point," Kovac said after the match.

"We weren't as focused as I would have liked for the entire 90 minutes. We had a 3-1 lead and got the most out of our quality players as far as finishing is concerned. But we didn't embrace the fight like we should have," he added.

Sporting director Sebastian Kehl said that Dortmund "were punished for our performance."

"Overall, we weren't really present today and we have to live with the point, we have to accept it. You of course can't let the game slip out of your hands in a matter of minutes," he said.

Guirassy scored Dortmund's opener in the 34th, but missed a second goal three minutes later when goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj saved his penalty awarded when Smith tripped Karim Adeyemi.

"The decisive moment was, of course, the penalty. We let ourselves be intimidated a little," midfielder Julian Brandt said.

Dortmund still managed to build a 3-1 lead, but Filippo Mané was sent off in the 85th for pulling down Abdoulie Ceesay. Danel Sinani scored from the resulting penalty and Eric Smith drilled home an 89th minute equalizer.

"With a 3-1 lead, we clearly need to do better. We need to learn not to play a man down in the important moments," Brandt stressed.
